Terms of Service

True Dish is operated by its founder, an individual based in Kansas City, Missouri. “We” and “us” mean that operator; “you” means you.

The site is currently run by an individual. Once a limited liability company is formed to run it, these terms will be assigned to that company and this page will name it. Nothing else about the agreement changes, and you will not need to accept it again.

Using the site means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.

You need to be at least 13 to have an account. You can read the site without one; you need one to review, save a place, upload a photo or report something.

One account per person. Keep your sign-in details to yourself. Anything done through your account is treated as done by you.

Your reviews and photos remain yours. We do not claim ownership of them.

By posting, you give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, display, reformat and distribute that content as part of running and promoting True Dish. That is what lets us put your review on a restaurant page, resize your photo for a phone, and count your rating into a community score.

The license lasts as long as the content is on the site, plus a reasonable period afterward for backups. It ends for photos when you delete them or close your account. Reviews are treated differently, for reasons explained in clause 7.

You confirm that what you post is yours to post: that you took the photograph, that the words are yours, and that neither infringes anyone else’s rights.

Do not post a review if any of these are true:

• You have not actually eaten there.
• You were paid, comped or otherwise rewarded for the review, whether by the restaurant or by anyone else.
• You own, work for, or are related to the people who run the place.
• You are reviewing a competitor to hurt them.

Also off limits: abuse, harassment, threats, slurs, other people’s private information, advertising, and anything that is not about the meal. Criticism is welcome and is not any of those things. If a restaurant had a bad night, you can say so.

One review per person per restaurant, so nobody can shout twice. You can edit or replace your own review at any time.

Reports are read by a person. We may hide or remove content, and suspend or close accounts, when clause 4 is broken.

We will not remove a review because a restaurant asked us to, and no position, badge or score on this site is for sale. A business that believes a review is false or breaks the rules can report it like anyone else, and it will be judged on the same terms.

If we take something of yours down we will tell you why. If you think we got it wrong, reply to that message and a person will look again.

Listings (names, addresses and phone numbers) come from public place data, including Foursquare’s open places dataset, and from what people send us. They go stale. A place moves, changes its number or closes, and nothing about that reaches us automatically.

Check before you travel. Nothing here is a guarantee that somewhere is open, and a listing is not an endorsement or a business relationship. If you spot something wrong, suggest an edit from the restaurant’s page.

You can close your account yourself, from your profile. When you do:

• Your photos are deleted from our storage, and your saved places go with them.
• Your reviews stay, under “Former member”. Your name comes off them; the opinion does not.

Here’s why the reviews stay. Deleting them would move the score of every restaurant you ever wrote about, so a place could lose its rating because someone quit. The diners reading those scores were also told they came from everyone who ate there. So the opinion stays and the name comes off it.

If you would rather a specific review were gone entirely, delete it before you close the account, or email us.

If you believe something on True Dish (most likely a photograph) infringes your copyright, email truedish@truedishreviews.com with a link to it, a description of the work, and a statement that you own it or act for the owner. We remove infringing material promptly and may close accounts that post it repeatedly.

True Dish is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not promise the site will be available without interruption, or that its information is accurate or current.

Reviews are the opinions of the people who wrote them, not ours. Nothing on the site is health, dietary or allergy advice. If you have an allergy, ask the restaurant.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill, arising from your use of True Dish.

Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to one hundred US dollars ($100) in total. The site is free to use, and that figure reflects it.

Some places do not allow these exclusions. Where that is so, they do not apply to you.

You can stop using True Dish whenever you like, and close your account from your profile.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and will say why. Clauses 3, 7, 9 and 10 survive.

We may update these terms. When a change is material we will say so on the site before it takes effect, and the date at the top of this page will change. Continuing to use True Dish after that means accepting the new version.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Missouri, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts serving Kansas City, Missouri.
